Hi all,
Ive been asked to put together a presentation on how our ICT department can make money within the company (education provider).
Ive thrown together a few ideas but overall Im still stuck as to how a department such as ICT can make money regularly - after all, ICT tends to be the ones grabbing most of the money for new systems etc (hello Blade enclosures ) and Im not a businessman, so the accountants upstairs throwing me words such as "capital gain, ventures, project packets, unsuitable metrics" dont mean heck of a lot to me
Has anyones ICT department here, been asked to make money for the company ? If so, have you managed to do so, and how ? (Obviously dont need fine details, just a basic idea)
Please note, this is how to make money, not save it.
TIA

Then the possibilities are endless...
First of all... content hosting. No pay no access.
This alone could be plethora of things.
e-learning material.
webinar/webcast and podcast/net radio.
blogs/articles.
If you want to take it to the next level start bringing in vendors : product review.
Next...
Community building.
Consulting hotline for any topics.
Next services...
file... like you know rapidshare ? There ya go...
Mail... gotta offer something different..
On a more technical side...
Proxy
DNS
Honeypot
VoIP
RBL list
So many.... so many.....

ALl good ideas except in NZ where bandwidth is extremely expensive, so for us to make anything from hosting services etc, would cost us a fortune and then we'd have to pass the charges on to the customer - and its a lot cheaper for people to just look overseas for their hosting at 1/5th the price we could offer it for.
Ive got an e-store as being one of the only potential money makers for us.... if bandwidth was cheaper then a lot of the options you have mentioned would be a go.....
Cheers

Ouch...
*winced*
ICT with no bandwidth... quite a challenge.
Even e-store is going to need bandwidth.
Only think I could think of with zero bandwidth is dismantle all the hardware and rent it for seminars, crash course, guest speakers, hacking event, benchmark researcher, ad-hoc labs... and sorts.
You can differ yourself with hardware vendor by providing services to operate/implement them aswell.
*shrug*

Hey there all, I'm really new to the community, but I just had to put my two cents in on this one. I've been asked several times if I could make an I.T. department make money for the company instead of costing the most money of any department. One thing you may want to try, since bandwidth in NZ is meazured with platinum, is remote monitoring services. They are relatively cheap to implement and don't require a huge amount of bandwidth. You can charge a decent monthly service charge per server or asset and with sms notifications, it's easy money.
Hope I helped.
peace.....

Although i don't have an awful lot of experience in that area, I would imagine you have a website promoting your company, and renting advertising space on there would be a nice kick off. Local businesses will likely pay up front for advertising space and you could add them to the website cheaply if not for free.

My two cents!!
Maybe market your ICT back to the business as a support provider. All activities can be charged in the accounts to the relevant departments. You provide service and support. They pay.
Good Luck. It is not easy to do, but possible.

thats a very strange thing to want an ICT department to do.
The amount of money you save by having an in-house ICT department is immense.
Just imagine if every time a user had to log a call they had to do it with a 3rd party support company.
So really your department does not make money as such but saves your company millions in I.T. bills
IF they insist on your department making money throw in the idea that when other departments have to log a call they have to pay LOL...
Or you could always rent your services out to the general public for a fee..
