We just upgraded from 5.5 to 5.6 and made a new MSI-package to deploy through a group policy. Now all of a sudden our asset-database doubled up. Troubledshooted this for a while and found that in version 5.6 the computer_id in the database is different from 5.5.

version 5.5
The computer_id is a MAC-address

version 5.6
the computer_id is a HW-name+random number (i guess)

Is this really intended this way? - It means we have twice as many computer-objects and the history of a computer is lost, now that everything is registered on a new ID.

(if we install a version 5.5 and then run the sysAidAgentUpdate.exe to 5.6 the computer_id stay correct)

in short - why does SysAid see the computer as two different assets?

Anyone know why this happening?

Can I force the computername to be the same MAC-address as before?

Dear JSH

In order to resolve this issue without first deleting the asset from the list please do the following > Go to System > Asset List > Click the asset which has all the information you do not want to lose > At the top of the screen you have the asset ID > Copy this ID > Open regedit > Navigate to the following Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ilient\Agent > Double click the Machine ID key and paste the asset ID in the value data field. Restart the SysAid agent service and delete any duplicate assets .

Please let us know if that resolved your issue .

Not quite the solution I hoped for. Do you want me to do this for 700+ assets?

edit: i made some additional investigation on other methods to keep your history and found that in the upcoming version 6, SysAid will automatically change the asset ID to the new type.

When version 6 will be released, you could resolve this issue by:

1. Upgrade to 6.0

2. Delete all the duplicate assets (those with VENDOR-SERIAL) and keep the old assets (those with MAC address).

3. Re-deploy the agent to those assets – It will create new asset with VENDOR-SERIAL, merge the history of the old asset and then delete the old asset

Hello JSH.

The change we have made in version 5.6 was meant to create a new way to recognize the assets which is constant so even if you re-build the machine and then re-install the agent, it will still report to the same asset.

The duplicate assets were created since you re-deployed the agent after the upgrade.

This is not the recommended way to upgrade your agent after a server upgrade.
The best way to prevent from this issue to happen is to go to preferences > asset setting, there you can create an upgrade rule that will upgrade the agent without changing any of the settings (like the computer ID).

The easiest solution for you to keep your old asset ID will be to re-deploy the 5.5 agent using the MSI file, which will install the agent with the MAC address as the asset ID then go to preferences > asset settings and run an upgrade rule.

Any new asset that you will add to your system, you can deploy with the new version of the agent, which will create it the new way.

Best regards.
Haim
