To all you successful IT professionals, we want to know: what's your secret? Are you the dedicated perfectionist always ready to go the extra mile, burning the midnight candle long after the office has emptied? Is it your deft ability to diagnose and repair the complex IT issues that are so vital to ensuring user satisfaction? Do you turn heads as the creative visionary that imagines the world of possibilities out there in the IT universe? Or do you ease your way into management's good graces by chatting about weekend plans and complimenting the undeniable cuteness of your boss' children? Now's the time to be honest – and give yourself a little pat on the back, because you know you're good!

The "secret" of success is a toss-up between a few of these- it takes both technical expertise and dedication to get our job done. They feed off of each other, and those two combined raise our service quality.

Agreed. None of these options alone can lead to a successful IT department. I find if the expertise is there you can pull from it the hard work. IT is like a customer service job, you can't have end user satisfaction with out good relations and quality of service.

I agree that a certain base of knowledge is essential. Nevertheless I think that every success starts with full dedication.
With a sufficient level of intelligence anybody can get(buy) the required knowledge.

I think I chose "Quality of Service", but it has more to do with the servant mentality we all share. We try to put egos aside and do what's right for the business / customer. You can buy experts, for sure, but if they come with an attitude or a chip on their shoulders, they won't help the organization be successful, just themselves...I guess I should have chosen "dedication", but it was a little too ambiguous as to what we were to be dedicated to.
