Re:Did you upgrade your organization to Vista yet ?

We are running 6 PCs in the office with Vista while 110 still run XP. We have had very little issue with Vista. The biggest issue to date has been printer compatibility, 1 printer requires a generic driver and one doesn't function.

We have found that the changes to the start menu tend to have the largest impact on the OS usability. It integrates the Windows desktop search into the start menu and in my opinion increases the speed at which programs, network shares or email messages can be found. Other factors which would interest me in when looking at Vista for the business are the improved scheduled tasks, task manager, event viewer and the broader range of group policy.

I don't really think Vista is the end all of the OS world, but since SP1 I think Vista is a worthwhile product. When XP was released, a lot of the same negative feedback was present. SP1 and SP2 made huge strides with the OS, and I think SP1 has made the same type of step for Vista. I've used Vista for over a year now without having to use XP for any compatibility, and would not go back to XP.

I would be interested in hearing specific issues that people have faced with Vista that were not an issue in XP.

I have been using Vista for just under a year. Since SP 1 I am a lot happier.

The function, speed, graphics are wonderful. Turn off services that are not used, Something I always did in XP too, and the damned thing runs sweetly. As for the start menu, that can be changed to the old 2000 look. Turn off themes and save a bunch of RAM.

For Xp only applications I installed VM with two HDD so I can have three computers running on teh same box. Luckily I have the RAM to do it.

Get one Vista PC, customize it then test the crap out of it.

On the other hand, mine isn't quite as bad.

To cut a long story short, what's the point of changing unless it's going to get you massive benefit (and personally I don't see Vista does).

If forced to move off of XP, I would rather migrate to Linux desktops than have to migrate to Vista.

We still run XP and have no immediate plans to migrate to Vista. We have a Vista machine in our Test/Development network and have had problems with driver issues, software compatibility and low performance compared to XP.

Something that I have found interesting is that at most Industry conferences (VMware Conferences, Microsoft Server 2008 rollout, etc.) many of the speakers have asked the audience if any of them have implemented Vista, and at every conference (including the Microsoft rollout), only a few people had implemented Vista, and of those it was in very limited use.

I agree with the assessment that its a dog like ME was and I'm just surprised at how seriously it has made me consider switching to non-MS desktops for the first time. If it weren't for a few critical applications, I probably would have already made the move to non-MS --- and I'm no Linux or OpenSource fanboy either.

Re:Did you upgrade your organization to Vista yet ?

We're rolling out Vista only on an as-needed basis. Basically, we stopped using downgrade rights on new hardware about a year ago after running a live-test environment with 1 poor lab rat per department. Some software we just run as administrator, but most of our stuff works fine with Vista. So far, we're about 40% Vista and about 60% XP. Group Policies to control UAC behavior fix about 90% of the Vista complaints, and another 9% of Vista complaints are actually Office 2007 complaints. 1% are the developers who still want to change code directly in %systemroot%, don't like having to edit their hosts file in their user profile folders and copy it back to their etc folder, and hate having to use ctrl+shift+enter to open a cmd prompt as admin.

People holding out for some dramatic change with Windows 7 are going to be disappointed, since it's going to be the same underlying system, probably with a few cosmetic changes so win 7 people will have a better OOBE with UAC without having to create group policies to control it.

Is there any thoughts on when Sysaid will become windows 7 compatible? I am currently testing Windows 7 on one machine in the office (we are skipping Vista) and sysaid does not report back to the server with any information.
Re:Did you upgrade your organization to Vista yet ?

at the risk of being shotdown here. I am a Vista user at home. in my business we will not be going to it. Like some others in this post i am hoping to leap frog Vista. but thats not because i dont like it. its simply because i started a year ago and 95% of my machines were using XP so i have left it as is, and HP continue to roll back there OS to XP, and if its not broken why change it i figure. however i dont think Vista NOW isent all that bad with the updates. i mean, from memory, when XP first arrived lets not forget it wasnt as flawless as most people seem to think, it had its issues in the beginning, and like vista it needed some ironing out, although vistas was a little heavier. i agree Vista started bad, but now, isent all that bad, unfortunately, it took to the world like a brick to water rather than a duck and lets face it first impressions last. end of it is im not bursting at the seems with excitement to use vista but i dont think its quit as bad as everyone else makes out to be.

on another note like most of you im happy to see and use windows 7 (got to use the beta version ). yes it installed fast and it seemed to work seemlessly with the older computer i had installed it on. my concern is, is that once it is officially released will it still be as quick? or will they be adding a tonne more to it which on release date will see it as quick as its vista counterpart. at the moment 7 looks a feels good but ill hold out until its been fully released to pass judgement and expect it to be the hero everyone is hoping for. they are still completing it so my concern is whats left to add, and what effect it will have to the overall running of the system. how do we know Microsoft didnt just give us a quick version to start the whispers so that when it does release it will sell really good.

It has been discussed, but so far I have been able to stave it off for another couple of years. Vista and businesses just don't belong together. As Techguy has stated, XP works perfectly well, so why switch?

Re:Did you upgrade your organization to Vista yet ?

I agree that as a home based OS then Vista isn't all that bad but as a business one it's a mistake in my opinion.

I was recently pointed at TinyVista and it's sibling TinyXP as an interesting exercise in what can be done with the OS's. Ok, before anyone says anything - yes, they technically violate the licensing agreements and I wouldn't have one on my work network for lover nor money! However, I believe they only violate said agreement on the basis of the licence key - which I promptly removed and used our own ones so I reckon it's all good. The good point is that a full XP install is about 2Gb and the full Vista install is only 3Gb!! How they've cut it all down I don't know but would love to find out. The XP VM machine I'm running is more than happy with 256Mb of RAM and the Vista one is running only 500Mb off the top of my head. Both fully functional and happy as can be.

TinyVista has been the only Vista install I've even vaguely liked enough to use for personal use rather than being forced into it.

Windows 7 ..... now there's something that's going to proving interesting. From the beta I've tried it seems much better than the existing Vista releases and I'm hoping it'll only improve as the refinements progress. I'm also very interested to see what spec it will run on as I think MS might have learnt its lesson with the huge Vista footprint .... ok, I hope so at least.

The more I look at different operating systesm, the more I consider them just applications and you need to pick the right one for the job.

We will not be moving to Vista and I am the one that makes that call. I do not want to replace all of my systems so that they will not perform as well as the old systems did running XP and don't get me started on the application compatibility issue it would pose.

However I am playing with the Window 7 RCs and it does show promise.

What is starting to get on my nerve is... the growing number of notebook vendor who sells OS-centric products.

In the past even when it is preloaded you can always change them to whatever you want... now the drivers seems to be designed in such away that any other os (even from the same os vendor) will be "crippled" in one way or another...

Universally bollocks..
