Windows 7 is just arround the corner, planning to migrate from XP or go thru Vista first ? BETA !

My last poll was about if at all you were deploying Vista in your organizations.... and it seems that most of you and the rest of the world.....are not !
However....Microsoft is planning to release in Jan 2010 which is 14 months away... Window 7 OS.

People are starting to talk about migration plans and remembered what happened in the past when they decided to skip a version.....(Windows 98 --> XP etc...)

So let's here about your thoughts...

I will share with you some points to think about :

Budget issues: License costs of upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 Vs. maybe no license price to upgrade from XP - may require a new license
Out of the box: What OS systems will you get when you order new PC-s / laptops... and when will you start getting them ?
Support for XP - well still no problem now - but what if Windows 7 is delayed a bit.... you might face an issue that you are stuck with an old none supported OS....
And I am sure you have more points....

So let's share ! Vote now.....

Oded

Re:Windows 7 is just arround the corner... are you planning to migrate from XP or go thru Vista firs

Hmmmmm always a question that puts a smile on my face.
Vista was set about as a major release but Microsoft have listed Windows 7 as a minor release.
Makes me think that they brought out a poorly functioning product apply tons of patches and TA-DAAAA we have windows 7
XP is working and supported so why move? Most of our users are still working with XP at home and work, Vista is going to be a huge transition for them.
Productivity will be adversly affected. Once the new OS's are better engrained in the public (i.e. there home pc's have been upgraded) and they are more comfortable with the new style OS, and more importantly they prove more reliable, stable and secure that might be the time to look at migrating.

But hey...those are just my thoughts

Cheers

Rain

I totally agree with you regarding the fact that the users need to get used to the new OS - and onces it enters their homes it is much easier.

This means that during 2008 most of the new home pc-s will be Vista unless the person who purchases insists on getting XP.....

So if Windows 7 and Vista have the same look and feel then it should be a good parameter for a smooth transition.....

Oded

Re:Windows 7 is just arround the corner... are you planning to migrate from XP or go thru Vista firs

I think that XP is going to be around for a while.
Vista didn't prove it self and there is no reason to upgrade (lack of apps support, hardware etc)

Microsoft "need" to prove us - the customers - that they still can make a good OS so I'm sure that it's going to be much friendlier and useful.

For the user it is going to be a big change but there is no other way. Don't deploy to the whole organization - take step by step.
We are upgrading the less problematic users from office 2003 to 2007 and every new pc gets it. The user get much more support this way than we could provide him with all the other users. It's easier to help 5 than 50.

The IT have to be prepared too for the new OS before the users get it. We have to check our apps, security settings, processes and the list can be as long as you can type ....

I see some users bringing laptops with Vista and they don't understand much of the "inside" as they didn't\don't in XP. Many users doing the same thing every day or working in Oracle\SAP magor part of the day and use the internet.

Most of the "upgrade" will happen in the IT department and the "free in use" users.

Say no to VISTA ! Look for Windows 7 betas !

I have been using Vista for the past 9 months. What I have noticed is; It works, it works very well.

I was reluctant to change from XP but then I remember I was just as reluctant from 2000 to XP and just as reluctant from NT 4.0 to 2000.

Yes Micro$oft have made a few errors in the design. Yes they moved things around a little, YES they screwed up with UAC.

Just like XP, 2000, NT4.0 and NT3.1 there were problems when learning something new. Once customized to your enviroment, and lets face it EVERYONE is different in the way they work, Vista performs beautifully. I liken it to getting a new car. It does the same thing as the old one just the controls operate a little differently and in a different place. Once you get used to it you love it.

Slam Vista all you want but at least give it a chance. ALL IT departments, (Court rooms, Law offices, hospitals and the like) I come across have praised Vista.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Mark

We have a couple computers on Vista Business here, as well as a couple linux machines. The majority of our systems are XP.

We haven't upgraded or transitioned fully to either vista or Linux for one main reason. Vendor Support. Until our specialized vendors support Vista or Linux, (or windows 7 for that matter) we won't be upgrading any time soon.

Also, sure Vista is flashy, has some much needed security features and enjoyable entertainment features, but the resources it requires can put a strain on a budget when you would have to upgrade 100+ PCs from 2002.

I have been playing around a little, havent had tinme to get down and test it properly yet. I think it's great apart from the fact i cannot get an internet connection because it doesnt install the drivers in VMWare. Quite frustrated!

They have done well though to produce an OS where the performance in real terms has been put first, not the way it looks or the faff that they try to promote as groundbreaking. I think there was a good possibility of Microsoft struggling in the "Financial Meltdown" but having seen the work they have produced last year and this Beta, i certainly think they are looking strong. Need to do something about licensing though, because at the end of the day Microsoft rely upon their upgrades and software sales. Generally in the home market, people get a new OS when they buy a new PC, and few people can afford to do that this year.

BTW if anyone has any help about the Network Card Driver please HELP!!!!!

I believe that a jump from Vista to Seven is most likely going to happen. I Finnally got three of my end users to see the advanteges of Running Vista 64 over XP64. The machines my end users use run bloated 3d cad solidworks software. Recentely I got one of the Engineers to break the mold by telling them that vista might offer better performance when dealing with his two quad core processors and 16gig of ram. He bit on it and after a quick training session on vista's improoved indexing search features and useful navigation of windows he is in vista heaven. Now everyone wants it installed, Oh and yes it did improve over all performance. And we could get rid of the ridiculous google desktop and side bar for a better more integrated one.

The biggest way to get rid of user complaints is to turn off the UAC make it first priority.

Love Vista if you don't your not using it right. take a training course and be in ahhh.

Just my $0.05 worth (inflation), but Win7 is great so far! I love the new task bar, it makes my life much easier. The Library feature is a bit confusing still but growing on me. So far only issue was in deployment of SysAid Agent. Because of the security in Win7 it would fail. I ran it manually, clicked the Allow button and it installed and showed up in SysAid just fine. Have tested Chat, InstantMessage and eMail so far and they all work. Haven't tested remote control fully yet. Also, customized SysAid a bit and it all worked without a hiccup.

I haven't used Vista much, but I know it frustrates me when people come in with it on their laptops and I try to setup our wireless WEP key to work. It's a total pain, so much for easier to use on that front.

I would say, start your testing on Win7, it seems to work well and I haven't had anything that didn't yet. I loaded VirtualBox with WinXP Pro just in case so I can crank up a virtual XP box to run anything that requires it. So far, I have had to.

Wish I had a touch screen so I could play with Multi-Touch. Oh well...
